My 77 year old mom's 100 day stay at Pullman during the lockdown

My mom visited Shanghai to see my 95 year old grandma early this year. She moved into Pullman in March. Because of the lockdown, my mom ended up staying up at Pullman till early June for 100 days. During her extended stays, the entire hotel staff (经理卢辰杰,大堂经理徐燕娴、前台李梦如和兰金星, 门房吳杰和张懿玮先生,保洁员叶群珍女士 ) really helped my mom extensively, from ordering food, teaching my mom to use covid test app on her phone, and providing emotional support when she was distressed and lonely. We are very grateful to everyone working at the hotel that my mom survived this long and stressful period and finally safely returned to the US. We hope one day we can return to the hotel and say thank you in person.

this time for our quite long getaway in Shanghai we chose Pullman Shanghai skyway consider the location and its reputation as chain hotel. Evelyn chin was there during checking in and she speaks fluent English that makes the process even smoother. we also got an upgrade to suite for our stay there. we love our room, location of the hotel,and also the breakfast spread in the buffet restaurant. the housekeeping did a very good job in cleaning our room every single day. we cannot wait to go back to Pullman Shanghai skyway in our next visit to Shanghai 🤗

We had a wonderful stay at the Pullman Shanghai. Immediately when we checked in, the customer experience manager came to speak to us & gave me her wechat so that I could contact her if I needed anything & we were upgraded to a junior suite. The room was a good size with a sofa & armchair, a desk, a large wardrobe, a king sized bed & a large bathroom. As a coffee addict, I appreciated the coffee machine in the room as well. The bed was big & very comfortable with feather pillows. The bathroom had a bath & walk in shower & a large area around the sink & a drawer - so lots of space to put things & feel at home. We didn't eat at the hotel but we did get food delivered from an app & it either went to a locker to collect or a robot brought it to the door. There is a good sized pool to use as well. Great location a few minutes walk from Dapuqiao metro station & there are shops & restaurants & a mall nearby. The customer experience manager was extremely helpful in finding out where we could go to get a Covid test to fly out of Shanghai over the holiday (quite a few places closed) & she called up to check that foreigners (using a passport) could go & that the place was open. We'd already tried a few places by ourselves without luck & were cold & tired from moving around the city trying to find somewhere, so we were very grateful to her for finding out this information. Overall, an amazing stay & we'll absolutely stay here again the next time we're in Shanghai.

Pullman Shanghai Skyway has rooms/suites that are just not suitable for a basic rest! There are many luxurious hotels in Shanghai, but I still chose to stay at Pullman Shanghai Skyway despite its noneconomic rate. This is because of the beautiful memory it very kindly created for me around ten years ago. However, it proves to be one of the biggest mistakes I made during my Shanghai trip. It is no longer the grand hotel I stayed at ten years ago. First of all, one can hardly imagine that the lobby of Pullman Skyway is a lobby for a hotel branded as luxurious/upscale. Ten years ago, the hotel had its own beautiful, energetic, and grand lobby. However, that lobby is now a shared lobby of the hotel and the office floors of the building. What is worse is that there is no space clearly dedicated to the hotel lobby - the hotel lobby is simply like a tiny corner that the building management gave to the hotel out of pure kindness. Or, in other words, the hotel lobby is just like a booth right next to a crowded avenue. It is to the extent that I needed to confirm with the security when I stepped inside the building whether it is really a Pullman hotel. Even a budget hotel has its own lobby, but, unfortunately, Pullman Skyway does not seem to have an obvious one. The disappointment continued to come when I proceeded to the room - is it seriously a room of a Pullman hotel?! A room is as small as a budget-hotel room; decoration that is seriously outdated (imagine those rooms that we see in the movies about the hotels in China right post the economic reform - precisely the rooms in Pullman Skyway!). The light in the room is overly yellow but dim, which gives guests a really uncomfortable feeling. Unfortunately, the hotel hardware is not yet the most disappointing bit. I called the front desk to ask if there was any USB charger outlet in the room. Guess what the front desk replies. "No", full stop. I said thank you then she ended the call. From this point, one can already know that the front desk of this hotel lacks two basic elements of an upscale hotel - a basic manner and a sense of responsibility to help their guests. Then, one more call further confirms this belief of mine. I called the front desk to request to change to another room twenty minutes after entering the first room, because the overall environment of the room gave me a physical headache. Very interestingly, the man on the other side of the call asked, "which aspect of the room makes you want to change to another room?". I told him I did not know but I just felt an intense headache right after I stepped inside. He then gave me an ironical laughter, then said, "well, if we change the room for you, how can you make sure the same feeling won't happen again?" Goodness. should I write you sir a detailed investigation report to apply for a change of room, when the fact is that I felt so uncomfortable right after I stepped inside? Can't you just give another room to your guests for the sake of simplicity? Furthermore, if you need a reason to change the room, shouldn't you do the investigation yourself instead of requiring your guests to do your job before "very kindly" giving them another room? Still, the worst is yet to be mentioned. At 9 AM the next day, I started to hear a wave of thunderous construction noises, and that noise did not seem to end. I thus called the front desk about that. The front desk told me they would ask the construction team (which worked for the hotel) to stop. However, after one good hour, that noise still continued. I then talked to their duty manager, and she simply told me she would look at this issue in a tone that could not be colder. I reported to her the two problems I encountered with the front desk on the night before (which I mentioned above). Still, she once again told me she would look at it in the same icy tone. Two hours after being waken up by the loud construction noise during a vacation morning and sitting inside the noisy room waiting for the reply from the front desk (which they promised to give "immediately"), I eventually got a call-back. Pullman Skyway told me they could "very kindly" give me another room, but I needed to wait for a while. I asked them how long it would be but they said they did not know. I told them, okay, I would move to that room when I was back after lunch. During lunch, my friend asked me what I would do if the new room had an even more obvious noise. I told him I guessed I might not have such bad luck. However, I was wrong. I moved to the new room at 2 PM. However, the noise became so obvious once I stepped inside. It was noisy to the extent that my friend asked me, "is it what you called a small noise? I rather stay at my university dorm than this room". I called the front desk immediately, and they once again told me they would check which room was available to change. They still did not give me any response after two good hours. At last, they told me it was because they were checking the rooms one-by-one and finally identified a noise-free room. I then moved to that room. However, I really could not control myself but signed this time. I could already hear the loud construction noise even before I put down my backpack. It was already nearly 5 PM at that time, and I had been dealing with this noise issue since 9 AM. Therefore, I guess it cannot be more appropriate to describe the first day of my Shanghai vacation as a day of dealing with Pullman noise. By that point, I had already given up. I had already changed the room twice, from floor 19 to 17 to 10, but the noise issue persisted (even in the last room, which the hotel promised that they had spent two good hours checking one-by-one!). I did not know how much time I still needed to waste with Pullman Skyway if I continued to demand for a room without construction noise. I was not even sure if this hotel had any room that was not bothered by construction noise! Therefore, I stopped calling the helpless front desk. On the following day, at 9 AM again, the construction noise began to bomb again. Thank you so much for your "morning call", Pullman Skyway. Pullman Skyway is a disappointment. One can find more efficient and helpful staff if she stays at the budget hotel right opposite to Pullman Skyway. The people in this hotel do not seem to understand how bothering it was to their guests when they said they would fix an issue at 9 AM but had the issue remained unsolved even at 5 PM - while the guest was wasting his valuable holiday time sitting idle inside the hotel room because the front desk told him "we are working on it now and would give you a solution very quickly". What is worst is that its room is just not suitable for sleeping! Pullman Skyway is just unable to offer a room that is slightly less affected by the construction noise inside the hotel. Its manager once told me it was because "the hotel is under renovation to give customers a better experience". Very well. so you know your hotel is not suitable to operate now but are still selling your noisy rooms? A typical example of a hotel that cares only about money but not whether the product it is selling is really alright. Sofitel Macau is a huge disappointment, but I thought it is only the problem of that particular hotel and other Accor hotels would be fine. However, after this terrible experience at Pullman Skyway, I am afraid that I was wrong - maybe the entire sets of Accor hotel have already fallen. I am now looking for a hotel for my trip to Shenzhen. I was initially heavily considering Raffles, but I immediately closed that website once I knew it is an Accor hotel. Thank you so much, Sofitel Macau and Pullman Shanghai Skyway. Thanks for so clearly demonstrating to me that the luxurious/upscale brands in the Accor group are now just a budget hotel brand, so I can avoid falling into any Accor trap in the future. I have deleted my Accor app after visiting Pullman Skyway.
